Happy New Year Cuban Food Poster(s) Giveaway

January 9, 2015 By Marta Darby 133 Comments

I've got all this great Happy New Year energy going right now and I have so many stories to tell and I'm going to San Francisco next week to visit Pixar and Skywalker Ranch. I just feel like I want to share the love and happy vibes.

If you were in my town, I'd say, "Hey, come over for dinner. I'll cook you something Cuban." But since that's not likely to happen, how about I just do a Happy New Year Cuban Food (Poster) Giveaway?

Yes. I think it's a wonderful idea.

If you were coming to dinner, I would be torn. What to serve? Check out this poster and just try to make a decision.

Because I look at this one every day in my kitchen, I think I'm going to try to master the art of making Pan Cubano. (See? It's not just cool looking. It's motivational, too.)

Comida-cubana-subway-art-1

Comida-cubana-subway-art-by-marta

So much Cuban food. So little time. *sigh*

I'm going to be giving away Three (3) Cuban Food Posters to 3 lucky winners.

Each 16"x20" poster is unmounted and  printed on heavy duty premium luster paper with archival fade-resistant inks.

It looks just like the photo above. Black background with white lettering and some distressing for an aged texture.

To enter the drawing for a chance to win one of the 3 posters, please leave me a comment on this post and tell me…

  • What's your favorite comfort food? (I'd have to go with picadillo, myself.)
  • Who makes it the very best? (Your mami? Tia Cuca? El Palacio de los Jugos?)

Leave one comment only, please!

Remember that if you want to enter the drawing for the poster, you must leave a comment on this post and I'll choose THREE winners on Wednesday, January 14th at 11:00 am PST.

Gracias and Buen Provecho!

If you're the impatient type (and you know who you are), my posters are for sale over at my Etsy shop: Marta Maria Designs. the 16"x20" is only $21.00 plus shipping and handling.

Marta darby designs logo

I also have a larger size (20"x30") and one (16"x20") on canvas, but that's not important right now.

Buena Suerte and Happy New Year!

Me encantaria tener tu poster Marta.

I am new to your blog but is already a favorite. I live in a little town in Virginia and truthfully I think I am the only Cuban around! Since the loss of my parents, more so since losing my “papi”, I have entered my “hey, I am Cuban” phase, I now cook more Cuban than ever before, and often get that gut-wrenching craving for the food I grew up with. Luckily I am married to a “gringo” who loves Cuban food! I am a very good cook (you guess it: “no tengo abuela”, LOL). I would love to win that awesome poster, and would display it in my Cuban-American kitchen orgullosamente! Thank you!Clara Isabel Matilde Cardet Sanchez Corteguera Herrera de Barden 🙂

When I need to reset I go for simple food. Bistec encebollado, a pile of fluffy white rice (7 minutes in the pressure cooker) and a nice banana a little on the green side. When I was growing up plantains were hard to find so my mom would give us a regular banana instead. You gotta do watcha gotta do right? So now, that’s comfort food for me. My mom’s sazón is the best but mine’s not bad either. Lots of comino, ajo y sal. Yummy yummy in my tummy.

My favorite comfort food is “Cuban” chicken fried rice made by my grandmother Julia and now my mom, Zoraida. As not too many Americans know Cuba had a lot of Chinese immigrants. My grandfather worked in una carniceria in Habana with Senor Wong who taught him many Chinese/Cuban slang words including “hoka fo” which he said meant “good food!”

My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home and I would love to have your poster in my new kitchen. I’ve Cubanized my Mexican husband and I know that he will enjoy it as well! My Cuban comfort food is arroz con pollo. My mami made it the best and I still have not found another that compares. I was just watching your mami on the video about the internet. My kids came to see what was making me giggle so much! God bless you and your mami!

Hi Marta! My favorite Cuban food is the same as yours: PICADILLO (con arroz blanco y platanitos maduros). When I was a little kid, growing up in Miami, My family couldn’t afford to go out to restaurants very often. But I remember one particular time when we did and I couldn’t read the menu so I ordered Picadillo. Everybody at the table laughed at me. First, because apparently (according to them) it was uncool to order that at a restaurant. But mostly, because we were at a Chinese restaurant. Whatever…

Arroz con pollo. My grandmother (father’s mother) doesn’t make it the tastiest, but for some reason it’s so good. It remind me of being a kid. She always serves it with tomato and avocado salad and extra olive oil to pour on rice. It’s always comforting to be in their cozy apartment.

Sure there are many dishes that, when made with love and passion, comfort me. Arroz con pollo, congri’, yucca, tostones, some have even mentioned malanga. And I would agree, 100%, if it wasn’t for the one dish that makes all of those just “food” when compared to my favorite and most comforting that the Cuban kitchen has to offer.Pan con mantequilla y café con leche. Period.
The way the butter pools in the basins of the bread between the crust and the miga. The way the butter rises and acts like a protective layer on the surface of your café con leche – protective in the sense that you are ensured butter in every bite. If you are fortunate enough to be left with just enough leche and just enough pan… you take that piece of buttered bread and push it to the bottom of your mug and soak up the remaining milk. I would inevitably hear:
    “¡Nino! ¡Usa la cuchara!”
That is comfort. A reminder that times were easier once. A reminder that as soon as I was done with my desayuno Cubano I could go out and play.
I forget to put out the cuchara every once in a while.

Talking with her about old Cuban recipes seems to bring her back to me just a little bit. She was my last link to all things Cuban, so your blog has been a God send!!
