And the number one reason why I could never live in Miami…

May 25, 2008 By Marta Darby 12 Comments

Versailles sign
I admit it.
I have no willpower.
This place is open until all hours of the night.
And they serve Cuban food, people.
Fabulous Cuban food!
And pastries.
Amazing Cuban pastries!
And I have no willpower.
It's like the Cuban Mecca.
And I am a faithful pilgrim.
To go to Miami is to go to Versailles.
And seriously, if I lived in Miami, well….
you can imagine!
Cuban food!
At all hours!
I would certainly rise to that challenge.
Did I mention that I have no willpower?
I would find myself completely out of control.
So it's a very good thing that I don't live in Miami.
In fact, I was kind of relieved when we finally got to the airport last week to come home.
I could finally leave temptation behind me and breathe once again.

But when we arrived at the airport and to our departure gate, we found this:
Versailles at the airport

Right next to our DEPARTURE GATE!
I took it as a sign from God.
(Thank you, God!)
That's Kikita and Adam making their "please, Mom, PLEASE!!" faces.
And it worked. Not much arm-twisting needed. 😉

  • Three Cuban sandwiches.
  • Three bags of mariquitas.
  • Three ice-cold Matervas.
  • Ummm.. FOUR pastelitos de guayaba. (por si... =D)

I know my limits. Don't judge me.

The way you cook, does Versailles really have that much on Martika’s Kitchen? I doubt it.

I had to leave Miami because I couldn’t stay away from the platanos maduros at Pollo Tropical.

I feel your pain! And I LIVE in Miami and pick up missionaries from the airport frequently…and then, they have the GALL to have a La Carreta right where I have to wait for these missionaries…I too hear from God at the airport!

mario-The attraction here is that SOMEONE ELSE is doing the cooking – and the cleaning up! =D
(otherwise, I really do kick butt… but that’s not important right now.)
    Besos,

Marta,Get an agent already, chica! You have all the elements for a great reality/cooking show on Univision. You ARE the quintessential Cuban-American woman!
You’ve got all the elements for a swell show: devoted gringo husband, fun kids full of spunk and class, that beautiful Luza, and serious Cuban-American homemaker skillzzzz!
    And that squinty infectious smile!
You’d be the more real Martha Stewart/Oprah/Cristina/Roseanne/Rachel Ray/Whatever…etc.
I may sound like I’m kidding, but I’m not!
…and then you’d have minions for the clean-up.

Mario used the word “minions.” That was awesome.

Versailles is a holy place of food, although the Cuban food of the house, of mama, is the best Cuban food. However, we do make the daily pilgramge to Versailles when we are in Miami – if not for the Cuban sand-wi-che or the cortadito with leche evaporada or the turrone ice cream with biscotti which is home-made and out of this mundo. La Caretta according to a head waiter at Versailles is also owned by Versailles. Although I find La Caretta to be of a lesser quality.

If I lived there I would probably have zero willpower over my appetite as well! The food is just mouthwatering.

I live here and I don’t think the food at Versailles is that great. They make good Sand-wi-ches, croquetas preparadas, etc, etc.. pero that’s it. I think La Carreta makes better food. Esa es mi opinion. There are other better places to eat. La Habana Vieja Rest. is a good place.
