Math inferiority

October 16, 2007 By Marta Darby 8 Comments

Pa159267I am an Artist.
Right-brained.
Creative.
Spontaneous.
Random.

My kids are all those things, too.  They are also comedians.  (Jon added the theory of relativity when he saw I was taking pictures – cracked me up. =D)

But part of educating them means doing left-brain functions, like math.  (heavy, heavy sigh)

My friend Pam is a Math Whiz.  I totally feel inferior to her when it comes to math. (See? I admit it.) 😉

Well, technically, I can do Math That Has a Purpose.  I can balance my checkbook and read a ruler and measure ingredients.  And from my graphic design training I know about leading (rhymes with "heading") and kerning and picas.

Okay, so I can do math.  But doing problems just for the sake of doing problems?  Yawn.

So how do we get around that whole pesky we-have-to-do-math-for-school thing?  They do it online.
The program is called Aleks Math and it ROCKS!  So they do their math daily and they have to do assessments and they progress at their own speed and it’s a real life saver to us artistic, right-brained, creative, spontaneous and random types.

Occasionally they need help.  Which is why I’m so grateful that my brilliant husband was actually a math tutor in college.  (thanks, Honey!)

Because if it was just up to me . . .

Amy — re the morbid part. Who ever thought of putting the two trains on the same tracks anyhow?

I just never understood the morbid parts of math . . . If one train is 30 miles away going 80 miles per hour and the other is 50 miles away going 120 miles per hour, how soon will they meet? (And by meet, we mean collide in a huge and violent explosion)Why? 😉

You said it, Mrs. Darby!! Who REALLY cares what x is? When does “slope-intercept form” mesh with my life?!?!? Argh…

I am always amazed at Math! The whole world is Math! There is a really neat show on T.V. (it is a box that shows moving pictures!) called “Numbers”. Yes, it’s a crime show, but they are always relating everyday things to math! I am constantly saying “is that true?”. It shows me that we have an amazing Creator who is very mathematical! Love the post!

Jessica is a huge math person…NOT her mom! We got through Saxon Algebra 1 then I said, “Goodbye Saxon, hello Aleks myself.” I am amazed when I watch her solve a math problem…I agree with Pam…our God is amazing (and obviously very good at math). I do math vicariously through my very math minded daughter and sort of take a little credit (as her teacher) for helping her develop a love for math despite my hatred of it.
