I can’t say where this simple recipe originated but I can say for certain that every time I’ve served it to my guests, it’s always met first with happiness. “Yay, strawberries!”
Of course, because who doesn’t love fresh summer strawberries? Especially here in California. Fresh, sweet California Strawberries are like gold.
I have been serving this not just to guests, but as my kids were growing up this was their preferred way to snack on strawberries.
Because one serving of eight strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange – 110% of the recommended daily value. Also, strawberries are low in sugar with just 50 calories per one cup serving; and they are packed with beneficial antioxidants. Some studies show that eating 8 strawberries at least 3 times a week may help prevent disease and some cancers.
We always keep fresh strawberries in the house over the summer. It’s a quick, easy, and healthy snack.
After I bring out the strawberries, I then take a moment to explain to the lucky recipients that there’s going to be a lot of dipping happening. Like some serious don’t-try-to-stop-me dipping. My guests are mostly flowing with me at this point. They’re usually under the impression that I’ve maybe made some kind of fruit dip for those luscious strawberries.
But then, as they see the other two ingredients I’m bringing out, the excitement turns to confusion.
Then I explain that we’re going to take the strawberries and dip them into the sour cream taking them to the next level.
Wait. What? “You’re going to dip what in what?”
Further instruction: “Now dip it in the brown sugar.” *insert the sound of minds being blown right here*
At this point, I always promise that it will be the very best thing they’ve ever tasted (because it’s the truth) and because I tend to feed people pretty well, they will always at least try the magical combination at least once.
So, let me break it down for you.
The Best Strawberry Snack Ever
- 1 lb. of fresh California Strawberries (washed)
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- Take a strawberry and dip it in the sour cream.
- Take the dipped strawberry and dip it in the brown sugar until it’s coated.
- Enjoy!
The magic really happens as you dip and dip and repeat and the juice from the strawberries gets involved and creates an amazing and delicious alchemy of flavors.
There’s also the option of marrying the sour cream with the brown sugar to create a sweet gravy, but where’s the fun in that?
Now it’s time to take your bows and appreciate the greatest compliment ever: “I’m sooo serving this at my next dinner party.”
Mission accomplished.
