I scream. You scream. We all scream….

November 4, 2009 By Marta Darby 19 Comments

When I was pregnant with Amy (26 years ago) there was only one thing that I constantly craved.
Ice cream.
Not just any old pedestrian-out-of-the-carton ice cream, either.

It had to be from Baskin Robbins. There happened to be a BR just up the street, walking distance (technically, waddling) from my home at the time.

And during my 9 months of pregnancy I sampled just about all of their 31 flavors, plus some. (Actually, I learned that they only kept 31 flavors on hand at all times, but actually had a type of rotation of flavors. I learned this because I visited there multiple times a week for many months,  but that’s not important right now.)

Amy was born 4 days after this photo was taken. Notice how I was "Hulking out" of my shoes.

(Random reference to the Incredible Hulk here that has no relevance to this story.)
Preg w amy005

So they have their Classic Flavors and, of course, there’s always the Flavor of the Month. Don’t ask me how I know this stuff, just trust me on this. I'm a total BR Pro. 😉

My two favorite Baskin Robbins flavors are:
1) Gold Medal Ribbon – introduced in the late 70’s, it’s Vanilla and Chocolate ice creams with a caramel ribbon. Bliss!
2) Chocolate Mousse Royale – the richest, most chocolatiest (fl should totally be a word) combination of decadence this side of the Rockies. (Usually the September Flavor of the Month. Again, don’t ask me how I know this stuff.)

I’ve obviously been a big fan of BR for years. And coincidentally (?), we happen to have one of their stores just a block away. In fact, I may or may not actually make home buying decisions based on their proximity to a Baskin Robbins store. =D

So imagine my delight when the Baskin Robbins folks asked if I would like to give away some gift certificates on my blog. I thought about it for exactly 2 seconds…..

“Ummm…..YES!”

They’ve done the coolest thing: They have introduced what they call a Double Header Cone. You can enjoy your favorite ice cream and soft serve all on the same cone. Genius!

Double Header C…hoto RESIZE
So, today, thanks to the generosity of the Baskin Robbins folks, I am shamelessly promoting BR Ice Cream (which I really and truly love) by giving away $2.00 Gift Certificates to Baskin Robbins.  (I always include BR Gift Certificates in my kids' Christmas stockings, but that's not important right now, either.)

I have 20 certificates to give away. The first 10 commenters will each win two $2.00 Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Gift Certificates.

Br 2

Can you guess what Amy's favorite ice cream is? 😉

Tell me your favorite flavor of ice cream. Tell me an ice cream story.

Demand that I share my ice cream. Whatever….. =D

UPDATE – 11/5/2009:

Congratulations to the first 10 commenters (you double and triple accidental posters still only count as one. =D) who won the certificates. And thank you to all who participated.  I have sent emails to everyone. If you didn't get it, please just email me your snail mail address so I can get these out to you today.

PS. I love it when you share.

My mom says that when she was pregnant with me, the only food she really craved was Baskin Robbins chocolate chip ice cream! Ice cream is one of my favorite foods in the world, and I think maybe my mother’s constant eating of it for nine months contributed to that. My boyfriend insist that I have a separate stomach just for ice cream, since I can down a huge amount of it no matter how full I am!

I actually worked at BR one summer a very long time ago and the best day of the week for us was Tuesday when the new ice cream shipments came in. We’d grab the jackets, pink spoons and run into the freezer to sample the new flavors. As far as I was concerned, I had the best. job. ever! My favorite flavor is Jamoca Almond Fudge with a drizzling of hot fudge over it. It is pure deliciousness in a cup. See ya later; gotta make an ice cream run!

When my family didn’t have money Mom invented “pajama nights”. We would dress in the craziest PJ outfits we could think of and go out in town for ice cream and rent a movie. An inexpensive way to lighten the mood of a household 🙂 Also, it might explain why I’m so hard to embarrass!

My favorite ice cream in the whole wide world is Chocolate Almond. Especially the one from “La Baquita”.But I will take the Winn Dixie brand anytime!!!! 😉
When I was pregnant with my second child, my craving was Carvel’s Soft Chocolate serve with chocolate sprinkles.
Thank God that I lost weight with my pregnancy, otherwise, I don’t know how big I would have gotten. I ate that at least twice a week. And I’m not talking about a cone, half a gallon worth of soft serve with sprinkles. I know…Shut Up!!!!! LOL!!!!

My family left Cuba in early 1961.My brother was My family left Cuba in early 1961.My brother was on the first Pedro Pan flight in December of 1960. Happily, my family was only separated for a few very tense months. But we were part of the lucky few who managed to leave the country rather quickly.Once reunited, my father vowed we’d never be separated again and so when my older sisters were to be married in California, he packed up the family and we never looked back.We lived in Miami for the first 3 years of our exile, before my parents moved us across the country, and so we made our lives in Southern California. As Cubans in California – “en el exilio del exilio” – we managed to find other Cuban families and connected with the familiar community of people who spoke our language and recognized our customs and our food.I’ve told the story of my family’s exile many times using whatever words the Lord sees fit to give my feeble brain.Tonight, I’m a white haired 70 year old grandmother (call me Wella😉) living in Southern California with the family my husband and I have created. My parents passed away years ago. (And I unabashedly miss them daily💔).What’s happening tonight (on the island that saw me born) is that the people have taken to the streets armed with nothing but pots and pans and have been banging them for 12 hours as of this writing, calling for “Libertad!”Who could believe we would actually see this day?
Who can sleep when freedom is so close you can taste it?Praying for the brave people of Cuba. May liberation come quickly! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼Also, I’m shining up my own pots and pans. It’s almost time.
There are just no words for this moment.

Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Mart Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Marta? 🌎 👀I’ve been so super obviously absent from all my socials, let alone my blog itself.
For a while there, I was overwhelmed by the once easy task of documenting my day-to-day life.Everywhere I looked, people moved on to high production video and I was hopelessly lost, so I put writing on the shelf and happily got caught up on all the seasons I’ve missed from the Great British Baking Show. But then, as I often say, “life is in session,” and my life was accumulating entire chapters before I could even type, “Oh, the Cubanity!”Which brings us to today. I’m starting to dip my toe back into writing online. Mostly, I miss the writing and telling about my extraordinarily ordinary life and the daily happenings at Casa de la Loma. So, tell me: Do you have any questions for me as I get back into the over-sharing of my days? 👀#mybigfatcubanfamily #belikemarta #callmewella #mbfcf
