This flu thing is really doing a number on me.
I was even tempted to try an over-the-counter remedy like Thera-Flu or some such thing.
But I did what any smart Cuban woman would do… I called my mom instead.
My 94-year-old mother is the original Old (Cuban) Wife from whence come the tales. =D
Her solution: "Dos aspirinas y un cocimiento."
That translates loosely to "two aspirin and a voodoo concoction that wouldn't be approved by the FDA."
She went on to describe what to put into the brew.
I'm allergic to aspirin and the cocimiento has an unusual (not appetizing) smell, so I'm just sitting here staring at it.
What to do… what to do?
Nope. I decided to not drink it.
I know. I'm a coward. I'm just going to go back to bed.
The truth is that I started to feel better the moment she answered the phone.
It's just such A Gift to still have my mom in moments like this.
Voodoo and all. 😉

What does she put in it?In my house it’s always “te de anjijible” aka Ginger Root Tea (just sliced ginger root boiled in water) it is anti-inflammitory and will unclog your nose and just sooth your throat.
The other is “te de ajo” (whole peeled garlic cloves boiled in water til infused, I don’t know why it works but in my house garlic is good for everything in coooking, bread, and when your sick)
Lastly for those horrible throats “Limon Con Miel de Abeja” lots of sour lime juice that has pulp with honey made into a thick syrup.
Hmmm what else oh yeah and the American over the counter stuff like asperine, dayquil and night quil.
Get better soon 🙂

I know you’re sick, but this is too funny. My mother forced me to take two aspirin and drink a “hot toddy” My entire adult life, I’ve never been able to swallow anything containing whiskey. Then there was the vicks vapor rub, clearly labeled, (I realized decades later) external use only! I was forced to inhale it and swallow it! Ditto the garlic. If there were such a thing as vampires, I am protected for life.I hope you feel better soon Marta, sending a very large hug your way.

Get better friend. At our house it’s Robitussin (even if you don’t have a cough), pretzles and apple juice. Good thing Robitussin was on sale last week at Walgreens. I have about 25 bottles that I got for free! We are set for the winter.
