Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.

June 17, 2008 By Marta Darby 8 Comments

If you were our neighbors…..

You might start recognizing the Cuban music and the open door to mean that the Darbys were going to be having another party. You would most likely be able to smell that amazing aroma coming over the fence and straight into your nose.
"What do they put into the chicken and rice to make it smell that way?"
You wonder this.
All the time.

There must be a party. Look at all the cars. Maybe it's just dinner and it will be a mellow night.
Amy's bday dinner
No such luck.
The music seems to be getting louder (if that's possible) during their dinner.

It looks like they're setting up something in the backyard.
Oh! It's that movie thing…..

But it sounds like tonight they're…. singing.
Singing? Yes, they're singing along to…. The Sound of Music??

{NOTE: Yes, indeed. The Darbys were celebrating Amy's birthday and the beginning of summer with the first outdoor movie showing – The Sound of Music Sing-Along! The sing-along part was my idea. =D}

Yodeling

Is that…..?
Could they be…..?
Are they…… YODELING???
Really? (Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo…..)

Oh, come on. Stop judging and just sing along….
You know you want to. =D

Maria:

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Folks in a town that was quite remote heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

Lusty and clear from the goatherd's throat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

the Children:

O ho lay dee odl lee o, o ho lay dee odl ay

O ho lay dee odl lee o, lay dee odl lee o lay

Maria:

A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

Kurt:

Men on a road with a load to tote heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

the Children:

Men in the midst of a table d'hote heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

Maria:

Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

One little girl in a pale pink coat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

Brigitta:

She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria:

Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo

What a duet for a girl and goatherd

Maria and the Children:

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:

Ummm (ummm) . . .

Odl lay ee (odl lay ee)

Odl lay hee hee (odl lay hee hee)

Odl lay ee . . .

. . . yodeling . . .

Child:

One little girl in a pale pink coat heard

Maria:

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hoo hoo

Child:

She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd

Maria:

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria:

Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard

Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hmm hmm

What a duet for a girl and goatherd

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:

Happy are they lay dee olay dee lee o . . .

. . . yodeling . . .

Soon the duet will become a trio

Maria:

Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Maria and the Children:

Odl lay ee, old lay ee

Odl lay hee hee, odl lay ee

Odl lay odl lay, odl lay odl lee, odl lay odl lee

Odl lay odl lay odl lay

the Children:

HOO!

Admit it.
That was totally fun.

And aren't you just wishing you had cool people like the Darbys for neighbors?
Amy's bday intermission

C'mon. Admit it.
You yodeled.
And you liked it. 😉

(Okay. Amy's birthday celebration was just a good old-fashioned BLAST. The sing-along is definitely one of My Favorite Things and I predict that we will be having many, many more sing-alongs. Any suggestions??)

The yodeling was my favorite part!
I’m thinking the next film should be a Disney classic . . . Peter Pan? Snow White?

A can of musical worms has been opened: West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Singin’ in the Rain, Flower Drum Song, Oklahoma!, Wizard of Oz. Of course, a couple of Disney Classics: Beauty & the Beast and Jungle Book. And if it’s ever made into a movie, “Wicked”!There is more, but summer is only three months long! 😉

I am SO THERE next time. If you don’t invite me I will simply crash the party. Mary Poppins…a second for Grease, Charlotte’s Web (I know not Disney…the old version, and so, SO good), a second when Wicked is made into a movie (you know it will be). I think I will have to get a screen for our backyard too…too much fun!!! Hmmmmm, Robert’s bday is in August…he doesn’t even know he wants a big screen for the backyard yet…won’t he be surprised!!!

How fun! We did the back-yard-theater-thing for a friends surprise 30th birthday a couple years ago. Our movie du jour was The Parent Trap. Her favorite book is The Giving Tree so we hung all her gifts from a big tree in my backyard and one of them was a first edition of the book. Lord, I love themes! What a swell B-day for La Kikita..happy b-day once again!Mario (the one from Michigan)

Marta-How funny is the look on your husband’s face? It’s like he’s saying “What am I doing here??”
