How Google Works – A very Cuban explanation

April 12, 2010 By Marta Darby

My mom, Luz, as most of you already know, is 96 years old. She reads a lot and is still very sharp for her advanced age. She has seen quite a few amazing things in her lifetime and still tells stories of listening to music on the first radio her family owned and being in awe of the sound traveling through the air.

My mom surrounded by her daughters.

My mom surrounded by her daughters.

She is still a little wide-eyed when it comes to understanding how a computer works, let alone the internet.

One day, I overheard her explaining to her big brother, Tio Fernando about these two know-it-alls: Cuco and Yayo who have a giant net where they accumulate information.

Wait….Cuco and Yayo? She’s talking about Google and Yahoo. (In Spanish, of course.)

I swear, I can’t make this stuff up.

You may want to get some popcorn for this. Enjoy.

Marta, this is priceless. Being Cuban myself, I totally get the lingo. Your mom reminds me soooo much of my dear grandmother. She was my best friend and confidant. Sadly, she passed away in 2007 at the “prime” age of 78. I miss her dearly. Thanks for sharing this clip of your Mom…. I truly loved and enjoyed it. It made me laugh…. alot. I still talk about it and have shared it with my family.

I have watched this twice now and love that you have this adorable video of your beautiful Mother. I regret to say that my grasp of Spanish has slipped since the days when I attempted to explain things to my patients in Hollywood and downtown L.A. I think I caught that she said you could push a button, ask a question, and eventually someone/something would answer. That sums up my understanding of the Internet, too!

Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Mart Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Marta? 🌎 👀I’ve been so super obviously absent from all my socials, let alone my blog itself.
For a while there, I was overwhelmed by the once easy task of documenting my day-to-day life.Everywhere I looked, people moved on to high production video and I was hopelessly lost, so I put writing on the shelf and happily got caught up on all the seasons I’ve missed from the Great British Baking Show. But then, as I often say, “life is in session,” and my life was accumulating entire chapters before I could even type, “Oh, the Cubanity!”Which brings us to today. I’m starting to dip my toe back into writing online. Mostly, I miss the writing and telling about my extraordinarily ordinary life and the daily happenings at Casa de la Loma. So, tell me: Do you have any questions for me as I get back into the over-sharing of my days? 👀#mybigfatcubanfamily #belikemarta #callmewella #mbfcf
