Why Are Cubans So Special?

February 3, 2015 By Marta Darby 52 Comments

That was the headline of a recent article in the New York Times.

Why are cubans special

A dear Cuban friend texted me that headline and asked, "Why are we so special?"

I don't think she was really trying to start a political conversation because she knows me so well, but that's not important right now.

I responded with, "Because we can dance and have great butts."

//giphy.com/embed/gmLkAXdut7IrK?html5=true

And that's how the crazy began…

I decided to have some fun with this today. (Thank you, Carrie for sharing your Cubanity with me.)

Here are 10 ways Cubans are special:

1) We can make great flan.

//giphy.com/embed/YTReO8o9Zs6NW?html5=true

2) We know how to curse colorfully.

//giphy.com/embed/68BAi3vWE1BVC?html5=true

3) We can fix anything with duct tape.

Duct+tape_e5178f_4113410

4) We know the secret healing powers of Vicks VapoRub.

Vicks Vapo

5) We make beautiful babies that smell of violets.

Violetas

6) We have sexy hair.

//giphy.com/embed/6vY15j8zPbDuE?html5=true

7) We smell really good.

//giphy.com/embed/yTWlm2CTttMnC?html5=true

8) Our full-of-sh*tness is endearing.

//giphy.com/embed/WjAAuOROAyUgg?html5=true

9) Everyone we meet is a friend.

//giphy.com/embed/132WBFdXqrYp3i?html5=true

10) Our abuelas are amazing characters.

//giphy.com/embed/76KJNlfGzScX6?html5=true

Now it's your turn.

Why are we Cubans so special?

(Note: If you start going political, I will assume you have no sense of humor and I will be forced to delete your comment. Ya tu sabes.)

    I still have the same Vicks Vaporub Mami gave me 25+ years ago when I moved away!
    And i love the ¿Qué Pasa, USA? images 🙂 That was a great show but did anyone outside of Miami and NYC ever see it?

Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Mart Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Marta? 🌎 👀I’ve been so super obviously absent from all my socials, let alone my blog itself.
For a while there, I was overwhelmed by the once easy task of documenting my day-to-day life.Everywhere I looked, people moved on to high production video and I was hopelessly lost, so I put writing on the shelf and happily got caught up on all the seasons I’ve missed from the Great British Baking Show.But then, as I often say, “life is in session,” and my life was accumulating entire chapters before I could even type, “Oh, the Cubanity!”Which brings us to today. I’m starting to dip my toe back into writing online. Mostly, I miss the writing and telling about my extraordinarily ordinary life and the daily happenings at Casa de la Loma.So, tell me: Do you have any questions for me as I get back into the over-sharing of my days? 👀#mybigfatcubanfamily #belikemarta #callmewella #mbfcf
