Cuban Poster – Comida Cubana Subway Art – A Giveaway

July 18, 2014 By Marta Darby 108 Comments

My kitchen is, along with the rest of my house, freakishly small cozy and cottage-like. There's barely enough room for one person to turn around in. Having two people in there trying to get a hot meal on the table necessitates some intricate choreography.

Marta's-kitchen with Cuban Poster

I'm truly not complaining. I am glad it's not very big. If it were, I know the messes I make while cooking would be proportional to the space I have, so I'm grateful I have my little kitchen.

I haven't quite yet mastered the art of 'cleaning up as you go.' I must have skipped that particular life skill class, but that's not important right now.

I (boldly) chose to paint my freakishly small cozy and cottage-like kitchen a Tiffany blue, which has a lovely Caribbean feel to it and my accents are black, red, and white. And I had the cabinet doors removed because being easily distracted I like to see what is where at all times.

Anyway, I wanted to put up my own Comida Cubana Cuban Poster in subway art style in the kitchen, but lack of wall space made it quite impossible. What to do?

Cuban Poster - Comida Cubana Subway Art

I came to the realization, kind of in a slow-motion-hey-wait-a-minute moment, that I could just have the same Cuban poster printed a little smaller. In fact, a 16 x 20 size would be ideal for that one corner. (By the way, mine is not framed, although it is very suitable for framing. It is "plaqued." A process that mounts it flush to a stiff wooden backing and covers it with a UV coating, hence the use of the name "plaque." Ask your local frame shop if they offer this.)

Cuban Poster - Comida Cubana Subway Art 2

Then I thought that maybe those of you who would want to display this type of Cuban poster in your kitchens may have the same that-20×30-size-is-too-big-for-my-kitchen problem. I apologize that it took me so long to realize this.

As my mom would say, "Las cosas del palacio van despacio." (Loosely translated, "you sure took a long time to figure this out for yourself.")

Cuban Poster - Comida Cubana Subway Art 3

Feeling contrite and generous all at once, I've decided to host my own giveaway today.

If you've been putting off buying this Cuban poster because the 20 x 30 size is a little too big for your kitchen, today's your lucky day. (Well, it's someone's lucky day…)

Cuban Poster - Comida Cubana Subway Art 16 x 20

I'll be giving away three of these 16 x 20 Comida Cubana Subway Art Cuban posters this weekend.

I love it–hope I win :)I love it all so its hard to pick….I would have to say Ropa Vieja…I love when my mom starts by making a huge pot of garbanzos. From there she gets the meat for the ropa vieja & the best stock to make a delicious soup with “fideos”….I don’t even know the name of it but it is delicious ! 🙂

Hi Marta! You always bring a smile to my day! I have to say my favorite Cuban food is Ropa Vieja con Arroz Blanco y Maduros- yummy! I always loved that dish since my Grandmother used to make it for me and I learned what the translation to English meant- it fascinated me as a kid LOL. Now I’m happy to say that I make it for my own family (after making a yummy sopita of course) and they love it as well 🙂 thanks again for your blog and website!!:)

Cuban food is just too good to be eaten one single dish at a time. My favorite Cuban MEAL must start off with some Cuban pastries, specifically croquetas and pastelitos de carne, and then the main course must consist of: bistec empanizado (my mouth started watering as I typed that out), white rice with a side of frijoles negros, yuca frita, tostones, and, my all-time personal favorite, platanitos! Throwing in some slices of Cuban bread wouldn’t hurt either! You just had to ask this particular question, didn’t you? Now, I’m craving all of the delicious food I listed! Thanks a lot, Marta 😉 By the way, that’s an awesome poster!

My favorite Cuban food is my mother’s black beans. I still have the last batch of black beans she made before passing away in 2009 in my freezer. When Hurricane Sandy came and we lost power I was sure to transfer those beans to my aunt’s freezer in the interim. It is a nosralgic memory of mamá and although I will never eat those smooth and tasty beans, it’s just comforting to know that her spirit lives on in the kitchen with me. Alexandra, N.J.

Rabo encendido con arroz blanco, frijoles colorados, yucca frita y un batido de Guanabana. And, to top it off…un pastelito de guayaba. Oh my Gosh, I made myself hungry!

The best Cuban food just has to be lechon asado arroz blanco frijoles negros and yuca con mojito. If the lechon is not available un pernil will work as well. I do well cooking the pernil in a slow cooker and then broiling the skin to a crisp. Delicioso!

Marta, it is so hard to choose just one favorite food! Does a perfect cafecito count? Lol. Nothing can hit the spot for me like a big plate plate of vaca frita y maduros y congri. Now I’m hungry just thinking about it! You never realize how you take Cuban cuisine for granted until you move 900 miles away from Miami. Other areas don’t realize that Mexican is not the same as Cuban food!!!

My mom’s fricase de pollo is my favorite! I have come close to duplicating the recipe but you know how that goes, it’s never quite as good as when mom makes it. When I’m out, I enjoy a good enchilado de camarones 🙂 See a theme here? It’s all in the sofrito!!!

OMG, I can’t just list one item, but, my favorite dish is Mom’s masitas de carne puerco, yuca, arroz y frijoles negros, and of course, FLAN!!! I eat flan kinda funny though…I remember the first time I ate flan the way I do now was at Latin American in Hialeah. I was maybe 7 years old and my family was seated all in a row because it was a big round bar-top with stools, almost like a restaurant in-the-round. I would enjoy my flan by just having a little sliver at a time, trying to make it last as long as possible. I never want it to end!!!

Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Mart Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Marta? 🌎 👀I’ve been so super obviously absent from all my socials, let alone my blog itself.
For a while there, I was overwhelmed by the once easy task of documenting my day-to-day life.Everywhere I looked, people moved on to high production video and I was hopelessly lost, so I put writing on the shelf and happily got caught up on all the seasons I’ve missed from the Great British Baking Show. But then, as I often say, “life is in session,” and my life was accumulating entire chapters before I could even type, “Oh, the Cubanity!”Which brings us to today. I’m starting to dip my toe back into writing online. Mostly, I miss the writing and telling about my extraordinarily ordinary life and the daily happenings at Casa de la Loma. So, tell me: Do you have any questions for me as I get back into the over-sharing of my days? 👀#mybigfatcubanfamily #belikemarta #callmewella #mbfcf
