Cubamerican, the Movie (MBFCF Giveaway #3)

October 3, 2013 By Marta Darby 4 Comments

I'm always happy when the Cuban community steps up when asked and they have not dissapointed so far.

There's a beautiful documentary called Cubamerican. There will be two screenings next week here in Los Angeles:

Friday October 11th at 7pm and 9pm • Gene Autry Museum, Los Angeles

From the Cubamerican site:

CUBAMERICAN is the stirring story of how the Cuban Revolution shattered
the Cuban family. Spanning the past 60 years of Cuban history, the film
evokes this tragedy and its universal themes of loss, freedom,
assimilation, struggle and triumph through the stories of Cuban exiles
that have achieved acclaim in diverse fields in the U.S.A. and beyond,
rendering a mosaic of a bittersweet exile experience. A pro-immigrant
story that grapples with the agony of displacement, contributes
rumination on the future of Cuba, and highlights the absolute need for
all of the world's people to be able to freely exercise their
fundamental human rights; CUBAMERICAN is an insightful and powerful
experience.

Today's giveaway is generously sponsored by Cubamerican The Movie. It's for my Los Angeles people, so if you know anyone who deserves the tickets in our West Coast community, please leave a comment on this post and submit their names.

At the risk of seeming arrogant, I will nominate myself because I am proud of what I have done as a single Mom and for my community. As a single parent, I have worked diligently to provide for my daughter. It has bene mostly an uphill battle and nothing has really come easily, but just like my parents sacrificed so much after uprooting and leaving Cuba to find a better life, I’ve made sacrifices for my daughter. It’s our responsibility as parents, isn’t it?
Throughout our life journey, one thing has remained a constant in my daughter’s life: she knows where her family came from and she is SO proud of it! At an age where most teens want nothing to do with speaking another language or learning about culture, my daughter is proud of her Cuban and Spaniard roots and fluently speaks Spanish – even in public! I was a founding member of a local Cuban cultural club that has helped instill our traditions in our children. She is proud of her heritage, she understands it and embraces it. I’ve worked so hard for that.
I’ve also worked tirelessly to instill a spirit of responsibility in her. I’ve taught her that she simply can’t live in a community without taking part in making that community better. We regularly volunteer to clean beaches and the L.A. River, we have spearheaded teams for the American Cancer Society and Children’s Hospital events, we have helped feed the poor, we regularly help at a camp for chronically ill children, every year on 9/11 we deliver cookies and flowers to our local police and fire stations, the list goes on.
During a time when so many young people feel entitled and show disrespect for their parents, communities and authority, my daughter shows gratitude. If I have to punish her, she accepts it and understands. I’ve worked so hard to help guide her and I wouldn’t be this successful without what my immigrant parents instilled in me. For that I am forever grateful.
It would be an honor and privilege to attend this screening along with my daughter.
    Thank you.

I nominated my grandmother Lidia Henriquez who both falls under the category as 3. An individual who risked their life for freedom. and 5. Someone who has made a difference in their community.Anyone that knows my grandmother can tell you that she is the reason that my entire family has remained united. Through exile in Chicago in the years following her arrival in the US from Cuba and in our lives as Cubanamericans in Miami. She has made a differences in our community by always babysitting all the kids in our family, visiting the sick in the hospital and helping anyone in need. Always without paying any attention to her circumstance or personal well being.
In short, my grandmother is my hero born from nothing in Matanzas leaving the country alone with her two children and working from factory to factory to provide for her family. Her courage and strength allowed me to pursue my dreams and become the first to graduate from an elite University here in California (USC).
She is here in Los Angeles visiting me, and I know she would love to see this film. My grandmother always taught me that in America you can be anything you want, something she never had the opportunity to do in Cuba. She was right, from a poor kid in Miami, to a USC graduate, I can accomplish anything.

Marta I will like to nominate my cousin Hugo larosa. He lives in LA and he is someone that has made a difference in his community. He will love to see this movie. He himself has a lot to share about what happen in his childhood related to Cuba and coming to America. I hope he gets the chance to see this wonderful movie.

Do you know if Gene Autry was in Cuba during the Cuban Revolution? It would have been December, 1959.
