I sometimes feel like I do a lot.
(and I do, but that's not important right now.)
I set out the other day to document a regular school/work day around here. (okay, I'm not going to give you all the graphic and gory details. Just the broad strokes.)
Here's how it usually goes….
Every Morning
by Marta
by Marta
- I get up. (Okay, so it's more like "I come to," but that's not important right now, either. =D)
- Make our bed. (I always make the bed because Eric gets up a few hours earlier than I do. It's a small price to pay for those extra hours of sleep.)
- I make coffee. (I could totally do this the night before if I was disciplined enough. But I'm not. Seriously. My coffee maker has a timer. I am just that lazy….)
- While the coffee is brewing and because I am still not awake enough to speak, I go outside and deadhead the roses, weed, clear leaves and generally putter around and admire my garden. This puts me in a great mood, but does not yet give me speech capability. 😉
- I cut some fresh flowers to put in vases around the house which totally makes me happy.
- I go inside and pour myself a cup of coffee. I am currently enjoying Peet's Major Dickason's Blend. (I know you're thinking to yourself, "but you're Cuban! Where's your espresso?" or maybe you weren't…. I can't drink espresso in the morning. My stomach is not yet awake enough… Although I do drink my coffee black if that counts for anything.)
- I make some whole grain toast. Milton's is my whole grain of choice. With Margie's Guava Fruit Spread (what else?) =D
- I am usually reading a book (or five!) and do so with breakfast. At this point of the day – before my coffee – I can read in English. I just can't speak it yet. My family knows not to even attempt conversation. (NOTE: Reading the Harry Potter Series again. I'm in Book 4 – Goblet of Fire. Really enjoying it. Looking forward to the Half-Blood Prince.)
- By now, the kids have done their own chores and have started on their schooling for the day. (I really don't have much to do with them as they are both pretty independent learners now. I just wave my scepter around and like the Queen of Hearts sing, "Heads will roll!") =D
- Lucy wears her headphones to listen to her music while she works (and probably to shut out the noisiness of the rest of us. I like to call this one: Geeky-Retro-Nerdy-Girl.)
- I then log on and check my favorite blogs, work on my photo projects or my own online classes. If I have video or design work this is when I do it. I log in to Yahoo and chat with my first-born at this time, too.
It's right around this time each day that I marvel at how extraordinarily ordinary my life is right now even though I really do lead a charmed life.
And this is all before lunchtime, at which point my brain becomes bilingual again! =D
What do you routinely do each morning? I want to know. I do.
Wake up. Try not to wake Chris up, as he has either been up working until the wee hours or has been out singing. (Yes, mixed marriage of night owl/day owl.)Put on gym clothes before I can think about how crazy working out is and how much I hate it. Remember that eating is my main hobby and that exercise must be my second-main hobby.
Feed the cats before they kill me and eat me.
Wonder why it’s so cold. Check the thermostat to make sure the heater isn’t broken. Wish for global warming.
Make coffee. I have learned to like it, especially when it is mixed with milk and chocolate.
Drink my homemade mocha while I read my favorite blogs (yours, of course!) and the newspaper online. Make some oatmeal and read some more blogs.
Once Chris is up, make the bed, grab my library books and my grocery list and run to the gym.
It depends. On MWF Alan has class and leaves by 7:30 – those are my lazy days. I stay in bed usually until he comes back at 10:30am. Nemo, my cat, cozies up with me. No sense in having breakfast by myself. The rest of the week, after hitting that snooze button I don’t know how many times, I manage to roll out of bed. Alan springs out of bed. I hate that.
So I sleepwalk to the kitchen to make coffee. I use my American coffee maker to brew Pilon. In more affluent times, I tried different coffees. Alan makes milk – we use powdered milk. He also washes whatever is in the sink while I make breakfast.
Oh yeah the bed. That’s Alan pet peeve. So we make the bed once I’m awake….a long time after that cafe con leche.
To get my brain going, I do my blog reading/searching right after breakfast and then school work.
I was looking forward to spending some time with Johanthan and Lucy in Las Vegas but didn’t get the chance… Maybe someone else in the family will tie the knot soon??? Or maybe they want to spend some time on the East Coast aka The Future
My alarm goes off, I hit snooze, the 2nd time it goes off I begin doing bad math (I have my clock set 20 minutes fast because I’m perpetually late) about what the real time is and how much longer I can stay in bed.By the 3rd time, I begin to wonder what has happened on the internet while I was away so I lean over and open my laptop.
Some days there are other people up and chatty at this hour and I will take time attempting conversation while trying to read Mami’s blog and think of what I’ll be wearing to work. I am not a morning person so in these morning chats I tend to be snotty and sarcastic, somehow, people overlook this fault and still love me.
Once it looks like I’m dancing on the line of being late, I will jump up, get dressed, say goodbye to my chat buddies, and leave my room.
Now I’m in the kitchen where I’m making my morning espresso and have to speak in Spanish with Abuela. Sometimes I will be late to work because she’s quite chatty and telling a fun story about her life in Cuba, other times I just tell her I love her and go.
No, I don’t make my bed. Not usually. De vez en cuando I will half-make it: I pull the covers up in a mostly neat fashion.
I don’t get up with an alarm, I just wake up and it’s usually around 8:15am. Okay..some times 8:40am. My husband has been up and working for a couple of hours by now. The first thing I do when I get up is make the bed. Then I open the blinds to get sunshine in. I walk to the bathroom….hum…I’ll skip this part. 😉 I wash my face and brush my teeth, (Why has every one skipped this part???!!!), I get dressed and go downstairs to brew my coffee. While it’s brewing I water my roses, make the bed from the downstairs bedroom where my hubby sleeps sometimes because of his snoring, come back to the kitchen and put six packs of Splenda in my coffee cup,(It’s a large coffee cup okay!) ah? What was I saying?!! I forget….it must be all that Splenda. 😉 Oh, yea, I add a cup of milk to my large cup of coffee, (I told you it was large), and pour in the coffee. Before I leave the kitchen, I take out some kind of frozen meat to cook later that evening.I head upstairs to wake my daughter up so she can start getting ready for her day. We homeschool. While she is getting ready, and she takes about 30 min., I go into our office/school room, and read my devotional on line, read e-mails that came in, and check out the blogs I love to read, starting with my favorite, MBFCF, of course.;-) Then, my daughter comes into the room and we do her bible lesson together. She starts her school work, and I check what’s going on with my facebook friends. No housework before noon, unless it’s the laundry and usually on Mondays and Tuesdays. 😉
I do not wake up willingly.I don’t even bother setting my alarm anymore. Instead, I am awakened by my mom, who insists I’ve had enough sleep. I stagger into the bathroom and splash icy cold water on my face. Back in my room, I take a good hour doing my makeup, brushing my hair, and planning an outfit.
I’m a teenager. It’s part of the job description.
I come downstairs and head into the kitchen. Jonathan and my mom have already been up for hours. I make some toast and pour myself a giant glass of water.
After consuming this hearty meal, I do some basic chores and then head to my desk.
Before I put on my giant sound-proof headphones, I clear off my desk, throw unnecessary papers away, and load up all the websites I need. And iTunes. Must have iTunes.
I hear my mom cheerfully chanting under her breath, “Heads will roll, heads will roll.”
I put on my headphones.
It was wonderful to see you & Kimberly. You know we love coming to Miami…it’s not a question of “if” but “when.”
Lucy Darby! You crack me up. =D
Mamicita!I crack ME up. =)
