Bet you didn’t know…

November 18, 2006 By Marta Darby 5 Comments

BetchadidntlayoutI’ve got my mom with me this weekend.

That means, of course, that I’m cooking Cuban.  Preparing for Thanksgiving next week and looking forward to Noche Buena next month got me thinking of pork.  (That last statement totally makes sense to Cuban Americans.)

So I’ve got pork chops in the crock-pot slow cooking in mojo. As they cook,  the aroma of garlic and spices is filling up our home.  This triggers memories for my mom and makes her chatty.
She starts telling her stories. I know most of them, of course. I never tire of listening to them.

But every now and then she tells me something I never knew about her life.

I wonder, "how could I have known her all these years and not known that??"
Then I think that maybe it is that way with me and my kids, too. There are things they just don’t know about who I am or what has happened in my life – the good and the bad.

So I am determined to tell my own stories on my scrapbook pages. I want my kids and their descendants to know me. I want them to know what life was like for me as a young exile growing up in a strange culture. I want them to know how important family has always been. I want them to know I care deeply about the people I love and the island of my birth.  I want them to know I had a sense of humor. =D

This is a great example of the pages I make now. The journaling reads:

Bet you didn’t know…

  • Most of my friends from 8th grade were also Cuban. (Mayra, Isis, Yoly, Carmen, Alina)
  • I learned how to sew when I was 8 years old.
  • I talk in my sleep a lot – sitting up with my eyes open.
  • My dream job would be to do stand-up comedy.
  • The theme song from the TV show, "Cheers," makes me cry.
  • I secretly love to read political commentaries.
  • I won a dance contest in high school. The prize was a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young LP.
  • My mother didn’t name me immediately after birth. I was almost named Marilyn or Virginia.
  • I’ve read "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy at least a dozen times – 3 times out loud!
  • I’ve always collected things. (paper dolls, tin buttons, plastic figurines, Nancy Drew books, art supplies, matches, ashtrays, mugs, teapots, boxes)
  • I sewed and beaded my own wedding dress.
  • My favorite time to go swimming in the ocean is just before sunset.
  • One of my photographs (a portrait of my sister, Alina) was displayed in "The Place Across the Street from the Hotel Laguna" in Laguna Beach.
  • I played in the very first Gillis Beach Volleyball Tournament in 1970. (mixed doubles category – we were out in the first round)
  • I ran into Jay Leno once at LAX. I had with me a People magazine, with him on the cover and a loaded camera in my bag. We had a long conversation, but I didn’t get his autograph or even a photo. (silly me!)
  • In 1960, I appeared on Cuban TV dressed as a bunny. (don’t have a clue why)

Tell your own story. In your very unique voice. It will matter deeply to someone you love.

Marti I just love your blog. I am a 47 year old Cuban American who came from Cuba at 6 years of age. I relate to so much of what you write. I am a stay at home mom to an almost 11 year old boy who is the light of my life. He is also very proud of his Cuban heritage. Kudos to you for you dedication to your family and for keeping Cuba alive for them. You have such a zest and enthusiasm for life! You are an inspiration. I live in New York, but find myself wishing I was in California so that I could invite you over for a cafecito and some pastelitos de guayaba! Take care.

You forgot about disney pins….or am I sending them to you in vain? And did you see jaws? Swiming in the ocean just before sunset can be dangerous. I wish I was talking in my sleep right now…but instead I am reading your blog….sweet dreams! Pam

Pam,I made the page before Disney pins entered my life. I would totally have to add them to my collections as they have become so important to me.
Swimming at sunset really is my favorite. I might skip it if I were on the East Coast or in Australia…. 😉

My family left Cuba in early 1961. My brother was My family left Cuba in early 1961.My brother was on the first Pedro Pan flight in December of 1960. Happily, my family was only separated for a few very tense months. But we were part of the lucky few who managed to leave the country rather quickly.Once reunited, my father vowed we’d never be separated again and so when my older sisters were to be married in California, he packed up the family and we never looked back.We lived in Miami for the first 3 years of our exile, before my parents moved us across the country, and so we made our lives in Southern California. As Cubans in California – “en el exilio del exilio” – we managed to find other Cuban families and connected with the familiar community of people who spoke our language and recognized our customs and our food.I’ve told the story of my family’s exile many times using whatever words the Lord sees fit to give my feeble brain.Tonight, I’m a white haired 70 year old grandmother (call me Wella😉) living in Southern California with the family my husband and I have created. My parents passed away years ago. (And I unabashedly miss them daily💔).What’s happening tonight (on the island that saw me born) is that the people have taken to the streets armed with nothing but pots and pans and have been banging them for 12 hours as of this writing, calling for “Libertad!”Who could believe we would actually see this day?
Who can sleep when freedom is so close you can taste it?Praying for the brave people of Cuba. May liberation come quickly! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼Also, I’m shining up my own pots and pans. It’s almost time.
There are just no words for this moment.
This is OUR Berlin Wall moment and the cracks are already stating to show.#patriayvida

Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Mart Where in the world is My Big Fat Cuban Family Marta? 🌎 👀I’ve been so super obviously absent from all my socials, let alone my blog itself.
For a while there, I was overwhelmed by the once easy task of documenting my day-to-day life.Everywhere I looked, people moved on to high production video and I was hopelessly lost, so I put writing on the shelf and happily got caught up on all the seasons I’ve missed from the Great British Baking Show. But then, as I often say, “life is in session,” and my life was accumulating entire chapters before I could even type, “Oh, the Cubanity!”Which brings us to today. I’m starting to dip my toe back into writing online. Mostly, I miss the writing and telling about my extraordinarily ordinary life and the daily happenings at Casa de la Loma. So, tell me: Do you have any questions for me as I get back into the over-sharing of my days? 👀#mybigfatcubanfamily #belikemarta #callmewella #mbfcf
