So. Cal. PSA

The following is a Public Service Announcement for any of my Cuban readers in the Southern California area.
The 6th annual Cuban festival, Mi Son Cubano, will be held this Sunday, May 4th, 2008 at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (right next to Raging Waters).

No, sadly, I won't be there this year. =(
I'm saving my strength for Miami and Cuba Nostalgia in two weeks.
Besides, I'll be in San Diego for a few days on a mini-vacation with my husband. =D
But, my beautiful daughter and co-blogger, Amy (who calls herself Kikita now) will most certainly be there.

She'll be the blond at the head of the conga line. ;-)

Kikita!
Que gusto van a tener los Cubanos en San Dimas cuando bailes. Quiero ver fotos. Tengo una pregunta; ?Que quiere decir Mi Son Cubano?
Ayudame,
Nora

Nora,
The "Son" (say it in Spanish with the short "o" sound) is a type of popular classically Cuban musical style. The son is probably the origin to what is known as salsa today. Our favorite is "Son de la Loma" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9hcHtnW-Fw&feature=related
which is in the "son" style but uses a play on words too.
My guess is that it is a Spanglish of the English word "song" - just like "guajiro" is a Cubanisation of "war hero."
That's your Cuban musical lesson for today.

Besos,
Marti
