I pretty much love all Cuban food. That’s really no secret, is it?
I’ve raised my family to enjoy Cuban food. In fact, Ropa Vieja and Picadillo are in heavy rotation around here. Also, my son, Adam, will always request Carne con Papas over any other food I make because it’s THAT GOOD.
The one thing I don’t make every night is dessert. But when I do, it must be Cuban and it must be pretty simple. These are my 5 favorite Cuban desserts.
Full disclosure: I’ve never met a Cuban dessert I didn’t love, but that’s not important right now.
Of course. Delicious in every way, Flan is the King of Egg Custards and my mom’s Flan De La Reina Recipe is The BEST.
2) Flan Cake
Speaking of flan, here it’s flan’s fancier and more modern cousin, Flan Cake. Because Flan + Cake = Awesome. You need this in your life. The first time you taste it you will marvel over and over. “It’s flan. But it’s cake.” Seriously. Try this.
3) Arroz con Leche
Your abuela made this for you, didn’t she? It’s high up there on your list of comfort food desserts, isn’t it? There’s a great reason. It tastes of home and deliciousness and starched petticoats and Cuban babies. If Agua de Violetas was a dessert, it would be Arroz con Leche.
4) Dulce de Leche Cheesecake
Because Dulce de Leche and Cheesecake. Both beautiful and wonderful on their own, imagine the awesome when they get together. Plus, when you’re making this recipe, you’re going to make ‘fanguito’ – cooked sweetened condensed milk in a can – which is as old-school as you can get when making a Cuban dessert. Dulce de Leche Cheesecake for the win. Amen.
5) Homemade Pastelitos de Guayaba
Guava pastries. Pastelitos. This could be named our National Cuban Dessert by default. Pastelitos de Guayaba practically define us. Homemade makes them that much more amazing. Have you tried my recipe yet? Can you believe how super easy these are?
“Why haven’t I made these before?”
Well, why haven’t you?
Do you have other Cuban desserts that you love? (Of course you do.) Tell me.
